Alaska 2024 Scene 3 - Wrangell Island Hiking Trails

Wrangell Island has several hiking trails that we walked during our visit in May of 2024. This music video highlights the various types of moss and lichen that cover the trees along the trails. The moss and lichen are due to the fact that Wrangell is located in the Tongass National Forest, which is a rain forest.

Alaska 2024 Scene 4 - The Three Sisters Overlook

Our favorite site for the scenery on Wrangell Island was the Three Sisters Overlook campsite, which is located 14 miles south of the town of Wrangell. The campsite is at an elevation of 500 feet above sea level, with spectacular views of the mountain peaks across the strait on a neighboring island. Our visit was in mid-May, and the wild flowers were just starting to bloom.

Alaska 2024 Scene 5 - Petroglyph Beach

On May 17, 2024, we took a drive over to Petroglyph Beach, which is famous for its ancient stone carvings. Experts believe the petroglyphs were probably carved by early Stikine Tlingit thousands of years ago.

No one knows the true intent or motivation of the artists, nor what the designs meant to their makers. Archaeologists believe they were a form of writing, a method of communication, or a way to record events, such as victories in war, the transfer of territory, or the performance of religious functions. Or they could simply just be ancient graffiti.

Alaska 2024 Scene 7 - The LeConte Glacier

On May 21, 2024, we took a 4 hour boat ride to see the LeConte Glacier located north of Wrangell Island. This is a very active glacier producing so many icebergs that it is difficult to navigate to get up close. We had to stop several miles from the glacier to view it from a distance, because there were too many icebergs jamming up the bay in front of the glacier.

Alaska 2024 Scene 8 - Float Plane Ride

The highlight of our trip to Wrangell Alaska in 2024 was a 40 minute float plane ride to see the LeConte Glacier from the air. The pilot also demonstrated a float plane water landing on Shakes Lake, before flying us back to Wrangell via the Stikine River valley.
