München
Germany & Austria 2017 - Video 2 of 17
We spent the first two days of our vacation in Munich, Germany, where we stayed in a hotel in the old historic city center. Our hotel was only a few blocks from the Marienplatz (St. Mary’s Square) and Neues Rathaus (New Town Hall) with its glockenspiel that tells the story of the marriage of Duke Wilhelm V to Renata of Lorraine. We got there just in time for the show. We then found a rickshaw tour that took us to a number of points of interest in Munich, including the Englischer Garten (English Garden) which is one of the largest city parks in the world. In the evening, we had beer at the famous Hofbräuhaus, which is a beer hall originally built in 1589 by Bavarian Duke Maximilian I.

Wednesday, June 14, 2017. Today we drive to our second campsite in Oberammergau, with a stop along the way to see the Pilgrimage Church of Wies. The church dates back to the 1740s. Lothar said we can’t see Bavaria without seeing this Church with all of its ornate decorations and paintings on the ceiling. We then drove to a campsite on the edge of the town of Oberammergau, which is famous for its Passion Play performed by the residents of the town once every ten years. Oberammergau is also famous for the many frescoes painted on the facades of the buildings. The frescoes contain traditional Bavarian themes, such as fairy tales and religious scenery.

Thursday June 15, 2017. After leaving Oberammergau, we made a brief stop in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the location where they held the 1936 Winter Olympics in Germany. Then we drove along the shores of Lake Walchen, looking for a spot to stop and have lunch, but all of the parking places for RVs were full. They are celebrating Corpus Christi today, which is a big holiday in Bavaria, so everybody was at the lake on holiday. Then we drove to our third campsite in the town of Bergen, Germany. We are staying at this campground for two days to rest up and take a break from traveling.

Sunday June 18, 2017. Today we cross the border into Austria. We are driving the route in Austria that my father use to drive after WWII when he delivered groceries to German prisoners of war. He was stationed in the town of Abtenau. We are camped just outside of Abtenau. The look of the towns may have changed since 1945 when my father was stationed here, but the surrounding mountains are still the same.

Im weißen Rößl - The White Horse Inn - St. Wolfgang, Austria
Germany & Austria 2017 - Video 11 of 17
Lake Wolfgangsee and the town of St. Wolfgang are perhaps best known by Germans and Austrians as the setting for the 1960 movie, the White Horse Inn (Im weißen Rößl), starring Peter Alexander. The movie was filmed on location here in St. Wolfgang, and the White Horse Inn, which is a real hotel, is less than one mile walking distance from our campground. So Lothar, Sue, and I walked into town to see the sights and have lunch at an outdoor café across from the hotel.

Schafberg Railway
Germany & Austria 2017 - Video 12 of 17
After our speedboat ride on Lake Wolfgangsee, we took the Schafberg Railway up to the top of the mountain that overlooks the lake. First opened for operations in 1893, the railway is a cog railway that has a toothed rack rail in between the running rails which enables the engine to climb the steep grade of the tracks without slipping back down the hill. The summit at the top of the mountain is at an elevation of 5,700 feet, giving us spectacular views of the surrounding mountains, lakes, and valleys below.

The Original Sound of Music Tour
Germany & Austria 2017 - Video 14 of 17
In 1949, Maria von Trapp wrote a book about her life entitled "The Story of the Trapp Family Singers." She later sold the rights to a West German film production company that produced two German language movies entitled: "The Trapp Family," released in 1956, and "The Trapp Family in America," released in 1958. In 1959, Rodgers & Hammerstein wrote a Broadway Musical called The Sound of Music, loosely based upon the book, starring Mary Martin. The Broadway Musical won 5 Tony Awards. Then in 1964, film director Robert Wise and 250 cast and crew members traveled to Salzburg Austria to film what is perhaps the most popular movie musical of all time. The Sound of Music, starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, won 5 Oscars. Many of the indoor scenes were filmed in Hollywood, but all of the outdoor scenes were filmed on location in and around the Salzburg area. Today, some 300,000 tourists travel to Salzburg each year to go on the Sound of Music tour. Sue and I took the tour during one of our days in Salzburg. The tour focuses mainly on the production of the movie and how various scenes were shot.

Lake Ammersee
Germany & Austria 2017 - Video 16 of 17
We spent our last two days at a campground on Lake Ammersee, which is close to Munich and the RV rental place. This gave us a chance to pack our luggage, clean the RV, and relax with Monika and Lothar before flying home to Minnesota on Monday. Reflecting back on our journey, we got to do and see all that we had planned on doing. However, doing and seeing touristy stuff is very temporary. The highlight of this trip was the fun we had visiting with our family from Germany.
